Beyond Watergate: These Outrageous Political Scandals Made Headlines Around The Globe

Elliot Spitzer

In 2007, New York Governor Elliot Spitzer began drawing the attention of federal investigators. As they found out, his bank reported suspicious money transfers, leading them to believe that he had been hiding bribe proceeds. But Spitzer was guilty of a different crime.

According to published reports, he had paid $80,000 for prostitutes during his tenure as attorney general and, later on, as governor. Naturally, it didn’t take long for Spitzer’s case to reach international media. After apologizing to the public and his family, he resigned in 2008.
