The Profumo Affair
The following political scandal took place in Britain in 1963. At this time, politicians had to watch their backs constantly (and check their houses) to ensure that they weren’t being spied on by a nation belonging to the other side of the iron curtain.
Secretary State for War John Profumo didn’t have much choice but to resign after he was found having an affair with the mistress of an alleged Soviet spy. A few months after Profumo’s scandal was revealed, Prime Minister Harold Macmillan also resigned.
