Mohamed Bouazizi

Bouazizi’s main ambition was to save enough money to buy a pick-up truck. However, history had other plans. The Tunisian street vendor became a martyr for everyone in his country in December 2010 when he set himself on fire to denounce the authoritarian practices of the North-African country.

In the style of a ripple effect, his tragic fate inspired a nationwide protest that led to the overthrow of Tunisia’s dictator Zine El Abidine Ben Ali. It also sparked a wider pro-democracy movement known as the Arab Spring, which eventually toppled the governments of Libya and Egypt.
