Queen Elizabeth I of England had much to prove when she took the throne. She was a woman, so she couldn’t make any mistakes that could call into question her ability to rule. Fortunately, one speech cemented her as a ruler to be respected.

The words she spoke at Tilbury, Essex, to her troops before they left to face off against the mighty Spanish Armada proved that women could also be great leaders. It bolstered the nation’s spirits and served as a show of strength since she did it while wearing full armor.
